Day 1: Machame Gate (1,800m) to Machame Camp (3,000m)

Your adventure begins at Machame Gate, where you'll meet your guides and porters before starting the ascent. The trail winds through a lush rainforest with towering trees, moss-covered pathways, and occasional wildlife sightings. After a gradual but steady climb, you’ll reach Machame Camp, where you'll spend your first night.

Day 2: Machame Camp (3,000m) to Shira Camp (3,840m)

• Distance: 5 km (3.1 miles)

• Hiking Time: 4-6 hours

• Habitat: Moorland

Leaving the rainforest behind, you’ll ascend into the moorland zone, where vegetation becomes sparser. As you trek up a rocky ridge, you’ll get your first breathtaking views of Kilimanjaro’s glaciers and the expansive Shira Plateau. The terrain is more open, and you’ll camp at Shira Camp, enjoying a beautiful sunset over the plateau

Day 3: Shira Camp (3,840m) to Barranco Camp (3,960m) via Lava Tower (4,630m)

• Distance: 10 km (6.2 miles)

• Hiking Time: 6-8 hours

• Habitat: Alpine Desert

This is an important acclimatization day. You’ll trek towards Lava Tower (4,630m), a striking rock formation. The higher altitude might make you feel the effects of thin air, but this exposure helps your body adjust. After lunch near Lava Tower, you’ll descend to Barranco Camp, which sits beneath the dramatic Barranco Wall. This descent aids acclimatization and improves summit success rates.

Day 4: Barranco Camp (3,960m) to Karanga Camp (4,035m)

• Distance: 5 km (3.1 miles)

• Hiking Time: 4-5 hours

• Habitat: Alpine Desert

Your day starts with the famous Barranco Wall, a steep but manageable scramble. Once at the top, you'll enjoy breathtaking views of the Kibo peak. The path then descends slightly before climbing again toward Karanga Valley. The trek is relatively short, allowing you to rest and acclimatize at Karanga Camp in preparation for the summit push.

Day 5: Karanga Camp (4,035m) to Barafu Camp (4,680m)

• Distance: 4 km (2.5 miles)

• Hiking Time: 4-5 hours

• Habitat: Alpine Desert

The final camp before the summit, Barafu Camp, is reached after a steady climb through rocky terrain. You’ll arrive by mid-afternoon, giving you time to rest and hydrate before the summit attempt. Try to sleep early, as your summit push begins at midnight.

Day 6: Barafu Camp (4,680m) to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), then Descend to Mweka Camp (3,100m)

• Distance (Ascent): 5 km (3.1 miles)

• Hiking Time (Ascent): 6-8 hours

• Distance (Descent): 12 km (7.5 miles)

• Hiking Time (Descent): 6-7 hours

• Habitat: Arctic to Rainforest

The most challenging day begins around midnight. You'll trek slowly up the switchbacks to Stella Point (5,739m) and then push to Uhuru Peak (5,895m)—the Roof of Africa! After celebrating and taking pictures, you’ll descend back to Barafu Camp for a short rest before continuing to Mweka Camp, where you’ll spend your final night.
