6-Day Tanzania Safari: Ndutu Calving Season & Serengeti Migration

Your safari begins in Arusha, where your safari guide will meet you at your hotel or another agreed meeting point.

After a short safari briefing, you will leave Arusha and drive toward Tarangire National Park. The journey takes you through the beautiful countryside of northern Tanzania, with views of local villages, farms, and changing landscapes along the way.

Tarangire is famous for its enormous elephant population, ancient baobab trees, and seasonal wildlife concentrations. During the dry months, the Tarangire River becomes a vital source of water, attracting elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffalo, and many other animals.

Once inside the park, you will begin your first game drive. Keep your camera ready because wildlife can appear around almost every corner.

Your guide will help you understand the behavior of the animals and explain the different ecosystems you encounter. You may see large elephant families moving between the trees, giraffes browsing high above the ground, or herds of zebra and wildebeest crossing the plains.

As afternoon approaches, you will continue exploring the park before heading to your lodge or tented camp for dinner and a relaxing evening.

Wake up to the sounds of nature and enjoy breakfast before continuing your safari.

Depending on your accommodation and wildlife conditions, you may have an early morning game drive in Tarangire before leaving the park.

You will then travel toward the Karatu area near the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The route offers beautiful scenery as the landscape changes from Tarangire's dry woodland to greener highland areas.

If time and conditions allow, an optional visit to Lake Manyara National Park can be arranged. Lake Manyara is a compact but beautiful park known for its diverse landscapes, birdlife, elephants, giraffes, buffalo, and tree-climbing lions in some areas.

Alternatively, your safari can focus entirely on the journey toward Ngorongoro and Ndutu, giving you more time for the migration experience.

By late afternoon, you will arrive at your lodge or camp in the Karatu or Ngorongoro area.

This evening is a good opportunity to relax after your first days of wildlife viewing and prepare for the highlight of your safari: the Ndutu calving season.

Today you will rise early for one of Tanzania's most spectacular wildlife experiences: a game drive inside the Ngorongoro Crater.

After breakfast, descend into the crater with your safari vehicle. The crater is a vast natural amphitheater surrounded by steep walls and contains a remarkable concentration of wildlife.

The crater floor is home to large numbers of zebra, wildebeest, buffalo, gazelles, hippos, elephants, and lions. With luck, you may also spot black rhinoceros in the more open areas.

Your guide will choose the best route based on current wildlife movements and road conditions.

After several hours exploring the crater, you will enjoy lunch before continuing toward the Ndutu area.

As you approach Ndutu, the scenery begins to change dramatically. The landscape opens into vast grasslands that form an important part of the southern Serengeti ecosystem.

During the calving season, these plains can be covered by huge concentrations of wildebeest and zebra.

Arriving in Ndutu is an exciting moment because you are entering the heart of the migration.

After checking into your camp, you will have dinner and enjoy your first evening surrounded by the sounds of the African wilderness.

Today is the main event.

After an early breakfast, set out for a full-day game drive around the Ndutu plains. During the calving season, this area becomes one of the most extraordinary wildlife destinations in Tanzania.

Wildebeest gather in huge numbers across the short-grass plains, accompanied by zebra and gazelles. The abundance of fresh grass provides excellent conditions for mothers to give birth and raise their young.

You may witness newborn wildebeest calves taking their first uncertain steps, mothers staying close to their young, or large herds moving together across the plains.

But the calving season is not only about beautiful newborn animals. It is also a time of intense predator activity.

Lions, cheetahs, hyenas, leopards, jackals, and other predators know that vulnerable young animals provide opportunities for an easy meal. This creates a fascinating balance between life and survival.

Your experienced guide will carefully follow wildlife activity and look for opportunities to observe natural behavior without disturbing the animals.

For photographers, this can be an exceptional day. The open landscape provides beautiful views, while the abundance of wildlife creates countless opportunities for wildlife and landscape photography.

You will carry a picnic lunch and spend most of the day exploring the Ndutu area.

As the afternoon light softens, your guide will gradually make your way back toward camp.

Dinner will be served at camp, followed by another peaceful night beneath the African sky.

After breakfast, begin your journey from Ndutu toward the central Serengeti.

The exact route and wildlife experience will depend on the seasonal movements of the herds. The Great Migration is a natural event, so the animals do not follow a fixed timetable. Your safari guide will use local knowledge and current conditions to give you the best possible experience.

As you travel toward the central Serengeti, you will have opportunities for game viewing along the way.

The Serengeti is much more than the migration. It is home to an impressive variety of resident wildlife, including lions, elephants, giraffes, buffalo, hippos, crocodiles, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, and numerous antelope species.

You may stop for a picnic lunch in a scenic location before continuing your game drive.

One of the joys of traveling through the Serengeti is that the journey itself becomes part of the safari. There is no need to rush from one attraction to another. You may spend time watching a pride of lions resting beneath a tree, observe elephants crossing the plains, or simply enjoy the enormous scale of the landscape.

Your final morning begins with an early breakfast and a last opportunity for a Serengeti game drive.

Morning is one of the best times for wildlife viewing. The temperatures are cooler, the light is beautiful, and many animals are still active.

Depending on your flight or road-transfer arrangements, you may enjoy a few hours of game viewing before beginning the journey back toward Arusha.
