The Marangu Route, known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” is one of the most popular paths to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro, offering comfort, accessibility, and stunning scenery. Ideal for first-time climbers and experienced adventurers, it provides hut accommodation, so you can rest in a warm bed, enjoy hot meals, and focus on the journey without camping.
Over five days, the trek passes through diverse landscapes. You begin in the lush rainforest, surrounded by towering trees, ferns, singing birds, and playful monkeys. The trail then opens into moorland, with expansive views of Kilimanjaro’s peaks and soft tussocks swaying in the breeze. Higher still, the alpine desert offers rocky plains, volcanic sands, and thin, crisp air, creating a dramatic, otherworldly landscape.
Finally, you reach the high alpine zone and summit Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters. Watching the sunrise from Africa’s highest point is unforgettable, with soft oranges and pinks illuminating the clouds below. Professional guides and porters ensure your safety, provide meals, and support your pace. The Marangu Route is a journey of discovery, resilience, and connection to nature, leaving you with memories of breathtaking scenery, personal achievement, and the joy of completing one of the world’s most rewarding climbs.

Your adventure begins in Moshi, where you will be picked up and driven to the Marangu Gate. Here you’ll meet your mountain guides and porters. After registration and a short briefing, you’ll start your hike through lush rainforest. The trail is peaceful and full of fresh air, with birds singing and, if lucky, you might spot monkeys along the way. The walk takes about 4–5 hours at a gentle pace, leading you to Mandara Hut (2,700m).
Meals: Breakfast at your hotel in Moshi, lunch on the trail, dinner at Mandara Hut.
After breakfast, you leave the rainforest behind and move into a different landscape of moorland and open skies. The path gradually climbs, giving you your first wide views of Mount Kilimanjaro. On a clear day, you can even see Mawenzi Peak in the distance. The hike takes around 6–7 hours before you reach Horombo Hut (3,720m).
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner at Horombo Hut.
This day takes you higher into alpine desert, where the air becomes thinner and the landscape feels otherworldly. The trail is steady and not too steep, but the altitude makes it slower. You’ll pass through the Saddle, a wide and open plain between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks, which feels like walking on another planet. After about 6–7 hours, you arrive at Kibo Hut (4,700m).
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner at Kibo Hut.
This is the most challenging and exciting day of your hike. Around midnight, you’ll wake up and start your climb under the stars. With your headlamp lighting the way, you’ll slowly make your way up to Gilman’s Point (5,681m), then on to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – the highest point in Africa. Standing on the summit as the sun rises is an unforgettable moment. After celebrating and taking photos, you’ll begin your descent back to Kibo Hut for a short rest, then continue down to Horombo Hut (3,720m) for a well-deserved sleep.
Meals: Breakfast at Kibo Hut, snacks on the summit, lunch and dinner at Horombo Hut.
Your final day is a gentle descent through the moorland and rainforest. The fresh, green scenery feels welcoming after the rocky, high-altitude trails. It takes about 5–6 hours to return to the Marangu Gate, where you’ll sign out and receive your summit certificate if you reached Gilman’s Point, Stella Point, or Uhuru Peak. From here, you’ll be transferred back to Moshi, where you’ll enjoy a hot shower, a good meal, and the satisfaction of completing one of the world’s greatest adventures.
Meals: Breakfast at Horombo Hut, lunch on the trail.
