Rising to 4,566 meters, Mount Meru is Tanzania’s second-highest peak and a rewarding trekking destination often overlooked in favor of Mount Kilimanjaro. Located within Arusha National Park, it offers a quieter climbing experience and serves as an excellent acclimatization trek. With diverse landscapes and fewer crowds, Mount Meru delivers a balanced mix of adventure and natural beauty.
The climb passes through varied ecosystems, starting in dense rainforest and gradually opening into moorlands and rugged alpine terrain. Volcanic features such as the vast crater and narrow ridgelines create dramatic scenery, while clear days reveal impressive views of Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance.
Mount Meru also offers unique wildlife encounters. The lower slopes are home to giraffes, buffaloes, warthogs, and Colobus monkeys, often seen along the trail. Climbers are accompanied by armed rangers, adding a walking safari element to the experience.
The trek is moderately challenging, with steady ascents and a narrow ridge leading to the summit. Reaching Socialist Peak at sunrise provides sweeping views over the crater and surrounding plains. Typically completed in four days, the itinerary allows for proper acclimatization with support from experienced guides.
Mount Meru is ideal for travelers seeking a shorter, scenic, and less crowded trekking experience in Tanzania.

In the morning we are collected from your hotel and transfer to Arusha National Park. At the Momella gate we finish registration formalities before setting off with your guide and armed ranger – there is abundant wildlife in the forests! The forest section is especially scenic with strangler figs and the possibility of seeing buffalo grazing in one of the clearings. In the late afternoon we reach a viewpoint before heading onto Miriakamba hut for dinner.
We set off from Miriakamba initially still in the forest zone but in a few hours as we reach Saddle hut for lunch in the alpine desert zone. In the afternoon a walk to the summit of Little Meru can be taken for stunning views before heading back to Saddle Hut for dinner.
We rise early and our hard work is rewarded at dawn as the sun rises to the East. Kilimanjaro is normally clearly seen from here and the sheer cliffs of the crater fall dramatically 1000 feet or more. We return back and after some brunch at Saddle Hut, we continue down to Miriakamba hut for dinner
The final section takes up to 3 hours to return to our vehicles where we say farewell to our crew and have time for a short picnic lunch and game drive before returning to Arusha for a well-deserved shower!
