About Ol Doinyo Lengai: The “Mountain of God”
Ol Doinyo Lengai — meaning “Mountain of God” in the Maasai language — rises majestically from the East African Rift Valley floor, just south of Lake Natron. It is a one-of-a-kind active volcano, famous for producing natrocarbonatite lava — a rare, fast-flowing, and cooler type of lava found nowhere else on Earth.
Its unique lava glows black in daylight and hardens quickly, forming sharp, rugged surfaces. Unlike other fiery volcanoes, Lengai’s eruptions are relatively mild, making it accessible to intrepid trekkers with a sense of adventure. But make no mistake — the hike is steep and challenging, typically completed overnight to reach the summit by sunrise.

Upon landing at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) or Arusha Airport (ARK), you’ll be met by a friendly GameDrive Africa representative and transferred to your comfortable lodge in Arusha. Take the day to relax, adjust to the altitude, and prepare for the adventure ahead.

After breakfast, we begin our scenic drive northeast toward Lake Natron, traveling through dramatic landscapes shaped by volcanic activity and traditional Maasai lands. The journey itself is a highlight — passing through dusty plains, volcanic hills, and colorful villages where Maasai herders guide their cattle across the terrain.
Upon arrival at your tented camp or eco-lodge, enjoy lunch and a short rest. In the afternoon, we take a guided walk to the nearby Engare Sero Waterfalls — a refreshing oasis where you can swim in clear pools surrounded by towering canyon walls.

Very early in the morning (around midnight), we begin the ascent of Ol Doinyo Lengai, guided by an experienced local mountain guide. The hike is steep and demanding, especially in the dark, but the reward is worth every step — reaching the summit at sunrise offers panoramic views of Lake Natron, Mount Kilimanjaro (on a clear day), and the endless plains of the Rift Valley.
After taking in the surreal views and catching your breath, we carefully descend and return to camp for a hearty breakfast and well-earned rest.
Note: This climb is for physically fit hikers and involves rugged terrain with loose volcanic ash and rocks. Hiking poles and good hiking boots are highly recommended.

Enjoy a relaxed breakfast with views of the rift escarpment and flocks of flamingos on Lake Natron’s shore. Before departing, you’ll have time for a short visit to a traditional Maasai boma (village) to learn about their customs, herding lifestyle, and spiritual connection to the “Mountain of God.”
En route back to Arusha, we’ll stop at the Monduli Maasai Market (if available on the day), where you can browse handcrafted jewelry, spears, and vibrant fabrics.
We arrive in Arusha by late afternoon, where you’ll be transferred to your hotel or onward to the airport for your departure.
