09:00 am – Meet Your Guide & Introduction Walk
Your guide will welcome you warmly and give you a short briefing on the day. As you start walking, you will immediately feel the charm of Stone Town’s narrow alleys lined with carved wooden doors, bustling shops, and children playing in small squares. This first stretch introduces you to the daily rhythm of the city.
09:30 am – House of Wonders & Old Fort
•House of Wonders (Beit el-Ajaib): Once the grand palace of Sultan Barghash, this was the first building in East Africa with electricity and an elevator. Your guide will share the story of Zanzibar’s golden age of trade and the sultan’s rule.
•Old Fort: Right next door, this 17th-century fortress was built by the Omanis to defend against Portuguese invaders. Today, its stone walls host small shops and cultural events. Walking through it feels like stepping back in time.
10:30 am – Sultan’s Palace Museum (Beit el-Sahel)
This palace was home to the Omani sultans who once ruled Zanzibar. Inside, the museum showcases furniture, portraits, and artifacts that reveal the luxurious lifestyle of the royal family. Your guide will also explain Zanzibar’s historical ties to Oman and the role of the sultans in shaping the island.
11:00 am – Slave Market & Anglican Cathedral
One of the most emotional and important stops:
•The Slave Market Memorial tells the story of East Africa’s role in the slave trade. You’ll see the underground holding cells where enslaved people were once kept in harsh conditions.
•The Anglican Cathedral, built on this site in the 1870s, is both a place of worship and remembrance. The guide will explain how the slave trade was abolished in Zanzibar and why this location is so symbolic.
12:00 pm – Darajani Market & Local Shopping
Your senses will come alive at the Darajani Market, where locals gather daily to buy spices, fruits, seafood, and fabrics. The vibrant colors, aromas, and sounds make this a true Zanzibari experience. You can also explore nearby shops selling handmade jewelry, wood carvings, woven baskets, and the famous Zanzibar chests. This is a great opportunity to shop for souvenirs while supporting local artisans.
01:00 pm – Leisure & End of Tour
Your walking tour concludes around lunchtime. You may choose to relax at a café or enjoy a traditional Swahili meal at a recommended local restaurant (meal at your own cost). If transfers are arranged, your driver will be waiting to take you back to your hotel.
